What's the Difference Between a Land Rover and a Range Rover?

What’s the Difference Between a Land Rover and a Range Rover? Land Rover and Range Rover sound so similar, so it can be hard to truly understand the difference between the two. Both share a uniquely British identity and the word Rover in the title, but the difference between the two really comes down to branding versus a car model. The most simple distinction between the two is that Land Rover is the name of the brand while Range Rover is the name of a model line. So the Range Rover is actually a Land Rover Range Rover. This can be more confusing because some Land Rover models are simply called Land Rover.

For example, Land Rover put out a model line referred to as the LR, which stands for Land Rover. Land Rover also has other model lines including the Discovery lineup, which includes the Discovery and Discovery Sport, and the Range Rover line which includes the Range Rover, the Range Rover Velar, the Range Rover Evoque, and the Range Rover Sport. The Range Rover line also includes the SVA Autobiography, a truly customizable Range Rover.

Land Rover as a brand has spent the past 70 years inspiring all terrain driving. The brand even has a very unique history of promoting adventure by financing worldwide adventure trips during the 1950s (1955-56, to be exact). Land Rover sponsored six Oxford and Cambridge university students and let them use two Land Rover Series I Station Wagons to adventure from London to Singapore. This expedition was based on the Oxford and Cambridge Trans-Africa Expedition that took place in 1954, which saw six undergraduates race 25,000 miles across Africa in two Land Rover Series I 86″ station wagons. Both events were planned and developed by Adrian Cowell, although Cowell only participated in the Far Eastern Expedition. The event was primarily sponsored by Land Rover who provided vehicles, while numerous other third party sponsors donated money, equipment, and supplies.

So now you understand what’s the difference between a Land Rover and Range Rover. The Land Rover is a brand built around adventure, while a Range Rover is a model line under the Land Rover brand. For more Wilde Land Rover news, Follow us on Twitter or Like us on Facebook.
